The 1963 United Kingdom 1 shilling coin is a copper-nickel coin with a denomination of one shilling. The coin was legal tender for 27 years, until it was demonetized in 1990.
The coin's obverse features a young Queen Elizabeth II facing right, with a laurel wreath in her hair and a ribbon with two ends flowing behind. The monarch's legend, "+ ELIZABETH · II · DEI · GRATIA · REGINA", runs around the bust, which translates to "Elizabeth the Second, by the grace of God, Queen". The designer's initials, M.G. for Mary Gillick, are also visible on the base of the shoulder truncation.
The coin's reverse features a flat-topped shield with the arms of England, which includes three lions "passant guardant" (walking to the left, facing the viewer) and the Crown of St Edward. The date of issue, 1963, is divided by the shield, and the artist's initials, WG for William Gardner, are in small letters at the lower edges. The monarch's legend, "+ FID DEF +" (abbreviated from FIDEI DEFENSOR which means "Defender of the Faith"), continues around above the shield, interrupted by the cross on top of the crown. The value and denomination, "ONE SHILLING", is around below, and the border is beaded.
