The kangaroo is synonymous with Australia. Millions inhabit this wide brown land, from the arid interior to bushland, parks and other open spaces fringing our cities. Out on the plains lives the largest marsupial in the world, the Red Kangaroo, said to be able hop along at almost 50kph.
Iconic design
The coin’s iconic design portrays a bounding kangaroo surrounded by stylised rays of sunlight. Inscriptions on a wavy-lined border include ‘AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO’ and the coin’s weight, purity, and year-date. Within the artwork is the inscription ‘RED KANGAROO’, and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.
The coin’s obverse depicts the Dan Thorne effigy of His Majesty King Charles III.
