Ancient Silver Tetradrachm – Alexander III “the Great” (Posthumous Issue)
Kingdom: Macedonian Empire
Ruler: Alexander III (posthumous)
Mint: Babylon
Date: c. 325–311 BC
Metal: Silver
Weight: 14.34 grams (underweight due to flan loss)
Dimensions: approx. 30 × 22 × 3 mm
Standard: Attic
Obverse:
Head of Herakles facing right, wearing the lion skin of the Nemean lion. Details softened due to circulation and age.
Reverse:
Zeus Aëtophoros seated left on a throne, holding an eagle in his extended right hand and a sceptre in his left.
Vertical Greek legend ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ in the right field.
Control mark ΑΡ (AP) in the left field, characteristic of the Babylon mint. Beaded throne legs visible.
Condition:
Fine to Very Fine. The coin is irregular and partially broken, with a significant section of the flan missing, likely due to ancient test breakage or damage. Surface wear, edge loss, and uneven fabric are consistent with ancient circulation. Weight reduced as a result of the missing metal.
