The Perth Mint’s ANZAC Day $1 coin program is a major numismatic tribute inspired by the deep significance of 25 April 1915, the day Australian forces landed on a hostile shore on the Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey. Comprising annual releases each featuring a new design theme, the coins honour all Australian Defence Force personnel who have served their country.
Remembering Sailors’ Sacrifices
The 2010 ANZAC Day $1 coin pays tribute to the Royal Australian Navy. With a design portraying HMAS Parramatta, a ‘River’ Class Torpedo Boat Destroyer built prior to World War I and the image of a Leading Seaman from the same era, the coin reflects the RAN’s long history of professionalism, discipline and courage. Including a silhouetted bugler, the words ‘Lest We Forget’ and the date of ANZAC Day – April 25 – the reverse also symbolises the nation’s extreme gratitude to those sailors who have made the supreme sacrifice.
‘P’ Mintmark
The aluminium bronze coin’s reverse also features The Perth Mint’s historic ‘P’ mintmark.
Australian Legal Tender
Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, the coin portrays the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse.
Presentation Display Card
The coin is housed on a presentation card with a imagery representing today’s RAN. Witha fold-out stand, it allows the coin to be displayed upright alongside past and future releases.
