Description

1830 Bolivia 4 Sol Silver Coin Boliva

I bought this silver coin last month on a trip to Machu Picchu in Peru.

1830 IL Silver 4 Soles 30mm (13.44 grams) 0.667 Silver (0.2895 oz. ASW)

This specimen is a four soles (nominally equal to four Mexican reales but lightweight and debased) minted at Potosi and dated 1830. The obverse bust is of Simon Bolivar, liberator of South America and the namesake of Boliva

The Potosi mint produced standard weight four reales (13.54 g, .896 fine) of the colonial type until 1825. After independence, the weight was lowered to 13.5 grams (KM 96, struck 1827-29). In the 1830's and 1840's, Bolivia issued an enormous quantity of four soles debased to .667 fine, all dated 1830 (KM 96a).
