The Perth Mint’s Young Collectors coin program has taken off in more ways than one. Following last year’s groundbreaking release featuring 12 Australian Animal $1 coins, this year’s spectacular offering comprises nine $1 Space coins that bright youngsters will find utterly absorbing. Housed in a lavishly illustrated presentation album packed with many exciting ‘extras’, the 2009 release represents a magnificent acquisition that will encourage many more young people to develop an interest in coin collecting.
2009 Space $1 Coins
This year’s Young Collectors program comprises nine Australian $1 coins entitled:
1. Astronomers – with a design depicting Galileo Galilei, who built a telescope 400 years ago and made many remarkable discoveries about the Solar System.
2. Craters - with a design depicting Daedalus, a 93 kilometres wide crater on the Moon.
3. Rockets - with a design depicting a Saturn V rocket, the biggest, most powerful rocket put to regular use.
4. Moons - with a design depicting an astronaut on the surface of the Moon, Earth’s only natural satellite.
5. Observatories - with a design depicting Australia’s famous radio telescope at Parkes in New South Wales.
6. Shuttles - with a design depicting a Space Shuttle, the world’s first re-useable spacecraft.
7. Space Telescopes - with a design depicting the Hubble Space Telescope, which orbits Earth at a height of nearly 600 kilometres.
8. Rovers - with a design depicting remote-controlled exploration vehicles used to explore Mars.
9. Space Probes - with a design depicting the Pioneer probe that is carrying information about the human race into deep space.
Uncirculated Aluminium Bronze
Each coin, which also incorporates the Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark in its reverse design, is struck from aluminium bronze in uncirculated quality.
Australian Legal Tender
Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965 , each coin portrays the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on its obverse.
Lavish Presentation Album
Each coin, which comes in a capsule to keep it in mint condition, fits snugly inside a lavish presentation album featuring dazzling coloured imagery of the Solar System, Galaxies and the Universe. Fully open, the album’s magnificently illustrated internal spread is nearly 1 metre wide!

The wonderfully illustrated information book features informative texts written with help from experts at The Perth Observatory. Providing answers to many of the questions young people have about space, the book provides a great introduction to each of the planets in our Solar System, with fascinating ‘Did You Know’ sections highlighting extraordinary and unusual facts. The book includes further information about the individual coin designs and the hobby of coin collecting, one of the longest established and most popular pastimes in the world.
Activity Book
The activity book features two young space characters who present a variety of brain-teasing word and picture puzzles. The information required to successfully complete the activity book can generally be found in the information book, although answers are also printed on the back page. The activity book incorporates a large choice of coloured stickers featuring space-related imagery.
Asteroids DVD
Presented by National Geographic, the captivating 60-minute DVD features geologist Eugene Shoemaker and his wife Carolyn who have remapped the heavens with their discoveries of more than 30 comets and hundreds of asteroids. (The DVD is encoded Region 4 PAL)
