In 2010, The Perth Mint’s internationally renowned Australian Lunar Silver Proof Coin Series
celebrate the Chinese Lunar Year of the Tiger.
Meticulously struck from 99.9% pure silver in proof quality, each coin honours the tiger, the
largest of the four ‘big cats’, which has profound spiritual and cultural significance in China.
Appealing to proof coin collectors, these releases also make outstanding gifts for people born in
the Year of the Tiger – 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998 and 2010 – who are
regarded as courageous and natural leaders.
Each coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.
DESIGN
The reverse of each coin depicts a tiger lying on the ground. The Chinese character for ‘tiger’
and the inscription ‘Year of the Tiger’ also appear in the design with The Perth Mint’s traditional
‘P’ mintmark.
The Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2010 year-date and the
monetary denomination are shown on the obverse of each coin.
