In 2010, The Perth Mint’s internationally renowned Australian Lunar Silver Proof Coin Series
celebrate the Chinese Lunar Year of the Tiger.
Meticulously struck from 99.9% pure silver in proof quality, each coin honours the tiger, the
largest of the four ‘big cats’, which has profound spiritual and cultural significance in China.
Appealing to proof coin collectors, these releases also make outstanding gifts for people born in
the Year of the Tiger – 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998 and 2010 – who are
regarded as courageous and natural leaders.
Each coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.
NEW PRODUCT RELEASE JULY 2009
DESIGN
The reverse of each coin depicts a tiger lying on the ground. The Chinese character for ‘tiger’

monetary denomination are shown on the obverse of each coin.

WHY PERTH MINT COINS ARE MORE POPULAR THAN BARS
While the fabrication cost of bars is generally lower than coins, if portability and international tradability is important to you we suggest you consider bullion coins because:
- The wider distribution network of coins means they are more recognised. Alternatively, check with bullion dealers in the country you plan to visit to see if they are familiar with the AGR Matthey and Perth Mint marks.
- In some countries bars are taxable whereas legal tender is not. Since Perth Mint coins are legal tender, this can be a significant cost advantage when importing.
- When selling, the highly finished surface and milled edge serrations of a coin can make less knowledgeable bullion dealers more comfortable with coins than bars.
- The silver Kookaburra silver coin is available in 1 ounce and 10 ounce as well as Kilo coin as is readily excepted all over the world .
