Proof Coins are produced when two dies strike a blank piece of metal with tremendous force. One die is engraved with the front (obverse) design for the coin. The other die has the back (reverse) coin design on it. The die used is treated in a special way; making the coins it produces show a different appearance.
High points on the coin design are now acid treated (on the die) and background (field) designs of the coin die are polished, with a mirror-like effect on the coin it strikes.
The “cameo” appearance gives the finished coin a frosted appearance (frosting) on the high points of the design, with a mirror like finish on the background. With reference to older coins a cameo appearance is quite rare.
Each proof coin made is struck twice or more times with specially treated dies.By using this method more than once the metal is forced into all the crevices of the die which then in turn, gives very fine detail to the image on the coin. With reference to some non-proof coins this fine detail does not appear.
. A coin is normally a piece of tough/rigid material, usually metal, the shaped like a disc, and most often issued by a government.
Coins are used as a form of money in transactions of various kinds, from the everyday circulation of the United States quarter, to the storage of vast amounts of bullion. In the present day, coins and banknotes make up the cash forms of all modern money systems. Coins made for circulation (general monetized use) are usually used for lower-valued units, and banknotes for the higher values; also, in most money systems, the highest value coin is worth less than the lowest-value note.
The face value of circulation coins is usually higher than the gross value of the metal used in making them.
